The reading

The Reading

…and watched as we carried away your pain

On hearing your words
I saw what they meant to you,
To hear you stumble on the things that matter most
Your memories and misrememberings,
Musings and rants.

How quickly time has passed you by
Your regrets
Your fears
Your family
You put it all out there,
Nailed it to your sleeve.

You entertained us
As you voiced your distress
Then signed our books
And watched as we carried away your pain.

Heading home
I thumbed through your book.
The ink is still wet
Your tears no doubt
A gift for my mum.
